Guidelines after Treatment

Even after the doctor has given you permission to eat, you may have little or no appetite after an appendectomy. You should begin slowly by drinking clear liquids, juices and perhaps herbal teas. Gradually work up a full diet so that your gastrointestinal tract can readjust to food. Whole, well-cooked foods that are full of vitamins and minerals are important for healing.
Lactobacillus acidophilus and bifidus are good at restoring bowel health after the trauma of surgery and potent antibiotics. One dose, twice a day, for one month is one recommended regimen. Follow the dosage directions on the product label, then on the second month, decrease to one dose per day if that is sufficient.
Vitamin B also helps restore strength. Take liquid or capsule B-complex supplement, once a day for a month. Vitamin C and bioflavanoids aid in tissue repair and in deceasing inflammation. You might want to take recommended vitamin supplements or a multivitamin.
Vitamin E is an antioxidant nutrient and is a mild but effective natural anti-inflammatory. Zinc hastens wound and tissue healing and supports the immune system but excessive amounts of zinc can result in nausea and vomiting. Zinc is easiest on the stomach when taken at the beginning of the meal.
