Life
after Appendicitis
Going through surgery is not easy Going through surgery is not easy; you will remain in the recovery room for about one hour after your appendectomy. If you had an open appendectomy, you might be up and walking within six hours. Expect to be discharged from the hospital — barring complications — in one to two days. If you have a laparoscopic appendectomy, you might be discharged on the day of your operation, or the next day. Your doctor may instruct you to refrain from jogging and lifting heavy objects for one to several weeks, depending on the type and complexity of your operation. Even if the doctor has given you full permission to eat, you may have little appetite after surgery. Clear liquids such as juices, herbal teas and broths may be helpful. You have to gradually work up to a full diet in order for your gastrointestinal tract to adjust to food. Whole, well-cooked foods loaded with vitamins and minerals are recommended for healing and to regain energy. Foods that are rich in beta-carotene and other vitamins are suggested. Most importantly, to make sure that full and strong recovery after surgery is obtained, sufficient rest is important, and being constantly on guard for post-surgery complications is essential.
