Appendicitis

What is it?

Appendicitis is inflammation and infection of the appendix, a small worm shaped pouch attached to the colon, usually found in the lower right side of the abdomen. The appendix is considered a vestigal organ, one that no longer has any great usefulness to the body, although it may play some small role as part of the immune system. The appendix can become diseased, becoming obstructed and infected, and causing death if untreated. An inflamed appendix may block off its blood supply, which will weaken its wall and cause rupture. Because of the possibility of rupture, appendicitis is considered an emergency.
Appendicitis has no definite cause. It can occur when the opening that connects the large intestine and appendix is blocked or if the digestive system has a viral or bacterial infection. It can affect people of all different ages.
The most common symptom of appendicitis is the pain in the lower right side of the abdomen where the appendix is found. A vague discomfort may also start at the center of the abdomen then move to the lower right side. The pain becomes worse when moving, taking deep breathes, coughing, sneezing and when touching the affected area. A low-grade fever may also be present along with nausea and loss of appetite.
